What is Spina Bifida?

Spina Bifida is the failure of the spine to close properly during the first month of pregnancy and results in varying degrees of paralysis, loss of sensation in the lower limbs, difficulty with bowel and bladder management, hydrocephalus (water on the brain), latex allergies, and learning disabilities. The challenges brought about by Spina Bifida continue throughout life. To live independent and fulfilling lives, people with this birth defect may need extensive medical, psychological and educational therapy.

What Causes Spina Bifida?

The exact cause of Spina Bifida is not known with certainty. However, scientists believe that genetic and environmental factors may act together to cause Spina Bifida.

How can I prevent Spina Bifida?

Studies have shown that taking 400 mcg of folic acid, before becoming pregnant and during the first three months of pregnancy can reduce the risk of Spina Bifida.
